Breaking the axle nut

I'm trying to remove the left rear rotor and having problems breaking the nut. The car is on the ground with the wheel/tire still on. I have the tires chocked.

I'm using a 24 inch breaker bar and a 32mm socket. When I try to break the nut I either pick up the back of the car or the wheel spins even though I have a chock on it.

Any advice? Should I use an impact gun to loosen? I've tried wd40.

Thanks, Ed

If you have a high torque impact definitely use it. You're not going to hurt it.

Easiest thing is to use a torque multiplier, but certainly not the simplest or cheapest if you don't already have one, it's overkill.

Taller chock, make sure the cars in gear, have the breaker on the side you have to push down etc.

OK....maybe I'm missing something here.........but if you are "trying to remove the left rear rotor" why are you removing the axle nut?

This is why I like this group. Someone who can point out what I’m missing. For a disclaimer I’m not a mechanic and trying to learn my way around the car.

I need to replace a couple of wheel studs. I’m guessing by your statement that I don’t need to. I’m working on the car tonight. I assume I need to remove the brake caliper and then what is needed to remove the rotor? I thought the axel nut was holding on.

I figured he just misstated a part.

The rotor can come off with just the caliper removed. You need to remove the axle nut to remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly, which you need to remove to replace wheel studs.

If you aren't using a press, make sure you at least use a bearing tool to pull the new studs in, use a ratchet by hand not impact. Also release the pressure every couple turns, especially at the start, to make sure the stud pulls in straight.

Which wheel studs are you using?

Blair sent me a link for these studs.

Ed the axle nut does not need to be removed to remove the rotor. Remove wheel, remove the 2 caliper mount screws and the lift the caliper off the rotor. The rotor and hat assembly will slide off the wheel studs. To remove the axle nut you will either need an impact or someone on the brakes.
